What is vi?

In the late 1970's Bill Joy, a graduate student at the University of California at Berkeley, and possibly the main motivator in the development of BSD Unix, created the vi editor.

You man be familiar with some word processors that include hundreds of commands, build-in menus, and features that extend to almost desktop publishing. Well vi is not one of those programs. vi is a visual editor that makes it easy for you to use the full screen as you create and maintain files. Such files may include shell script, source code, mail, documents or reports. One big advantage is that you can edit documents via a telnet window - try doing that with Word!

The basic procedures for using vi are the same for any document. it produces standard ASCII output, which is just what is needed for most purposes.
