Re: Tutorial 2 Question 6 and Question 7

At the top of tutorial 2 you will find the directory tree. "scripts" is in /home/demo, not in "misc". I suspect you created an extra directory by mistake for some reason. The next question asks you do to "cd ~mysql" then "pwd". If you type in just "~root" you are asking the system to run a directory...

Re: Putty

Is your account expired? If so click on the link sent to you.
Otherwise remember to boot the machine.
Unless you account is expired there is no difference in accounts which would cause this.

Re: Can't even log on

The best way is to install putty.exe (google it) and use that to telnet or ssh to linuxzoo.net.
click on JavaScript telnet to get you going, but it is slow.
Otherwise you need java installed.

Fedora 20 is out soon. I will probably upgrade to that over the next few months.

Re: DNS - named service /

It was more a rhetorical question...
The output shows 1 error.
Most importantly it says the rev file is not found.
In named.conf have you written a dot at the start of the filename for some reason?

Re: DIAG question 1

Use a recursive flag on chgrp, ie -R, and do this on /home/jim
You probably tried by hand to do this but forgot some files or directories, such as hidden files.

Re: Starting from Scratch...

Hi. That's a frequently requested feature.
Right now it is not possible, other than just click again on the buttons.
I will try to introduce a resit feature in the near future.
Sorry about that.

Re: Service named start failed

do

Code: Select all

service named start
tail -20 /var/log/messages
and hopefully you can see some errors which is stopping the service running.

Re: DNS Question 4

For the first field of the PTR records you only put in the LAST octet of the IP number, not the whole number.
Remember this is part of a reversed octet IP combined with in-addr.arpa.
Read over the notes again and consider the examples.

Re: Automatic disconnect

You are disconnected for a number of reasons... Sure if it is busy you will be dequeued after around 10-20 minutes. Confirmed email users get 20, and unconfirmed email gets 10. My own students have better priorities and timeouts of course, but this is a free service in general. But when the server i...

You should be using the demo user, which is in /home/demo, and not /root.

Maybe just a transient error...
Reboot with a fresh image and try again.
